The Big List of Group Costume Ideas

Fun, Cool & Just Plain Great Group Costume Ideas!

Bavarian Beer Wenches - Group Costume Idea for Women

Bavarian Beer Maid Costumes

If you want to dress up as a group for Halloween this year (or any other fancy dress event for that matter) then I’ve got some great ideas for you. There’s something really fun with having a group of you dressed as a group and it can make for a great night out for everyone.

Inspiration for group costumes come from just about anywhere – musical groups, television shows, films even everyday life. The hardest thing is to get everyone to agree on the costume idea which is where I come in. I’ve compiled a list of group costume ideas that you can all look through and see if one of them stands out to you all as the perfect one.

NOTE: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases – more information below

Group Costume Ideas Based on Music Groups

There are some music groups/bands who are instantly recognizable and so make a great idea for a group costume, here are some of the ones that spring to mind-

  • Abba – The 70s pop group were known for their costumes and if you feel like turning into ‘Dancing Queens’ for the night then this is a cool costume idea for a group of 4 (it should be 2 couples, but I’ve seen a few male Agnetha and Frida’s in my time and they’ve been quite funny!).
  • Kiss – Crack out the face paint and the platform boots for this group costume idea, another great costume idea for a group of four.
  • The Beatles – The fab four are another cool group costume idea and if there’s 8 of you you could try a ‘Beatles through the ages’ theme with their basin hair cuts and suits through to the longer haired Sergeant Pepper days.
  • The Spice Girls – For five girls you know that you want to dress up as the Spice Girls, it’s what you ‘really, really want’!   This is another fun group costume that is instantly recognizable.
  • The Village People – This six piece group are one of the groups that several generations recognize straight way and are likely to start people singing earwig disco songs such as Macho Man and YMCA!
  • Z Z Top – This Texan three piece group make another cool costume idea for a small group and you can see how to get the look below.

ZZ Top Costume Ideas

Perfect for a Small Group of 3

This Texan trio are best known for the beards that two of their members sport – the third member has Beard as a surname so doesn’t actually need to have one!

You actually have a lot of latitude with what you can wear to accompany these beards as ZZ Top have been around for quite a while and have been seen in a few different outfits over that time.

The most well known look was probably the one that coincided with their album Eliminator hitting the mainstream charts for that look you want the two bearded members of the band to be wearing black suits with the non-bearded Mr Beard wearing black trousers with a long black duster coat.   All three of them should be sporting hats similar in shape to the one featured in the image below along with some black sunglasses.

Of course another look that their fans are very familiar with sees them in jeans and leather jackets along with either hats (again like the one pictured) or skull caps and their sunglasses.

Personally I think as long as you all wear sunglasses and two of you sport these beards (and to really ‘sell’ it a couple of guitars – Frank Beard is the drummer so don’t have him with a guitar!) it won’t matter what else you wear everyone will know you’re ZZ Top.

Group Costume Ideas Based on Television Shows

Some of our favorite television shows have given us some great ideas for group costumes including these –

You’ll note that some of these contain links which will take you to another webpage that is dedicated to those particular costumes.   I don’t have them all covered yet, but I’m hoping to be able to get links for all of these group costume ideas in time.

You used to be able to purchase these Teletubbie costumes in a set of four which was really cool, but I’m having trouble sourcing a set at the moment so you have to purchase your favorite teletubbies separately.

Group Costume Ideas Based on Movies

Movies are another source of inspiration when it comes to thinking of group costume ideas, from classic movies to more modern ones that are certainly a lot of them to think about.   Here are a few that spring to mind

More Group Costume Ideas

There are lots more ideas for group costumes that don’t belong in any of the categories above –

  • Alice in Wonderland Characters – Someone obviously has to be Alice and then it’s simply a case of choosing the best known characters until everyone in your group has a costume.   The bigger the group the more less known the characters that will add to the ‘ensemble’.
  • Angry Birds – You can get all of the different Angry Birds characters in costume so it’s just a case of everyone choosing their favorites.
  • Batman, Robin & all the Villains – Make sure that you have Batman and Robin covered and maybe even Alfred and then simply add the villains until everyone in your group is covered – there’s certainly plenty of villains to choose from including the Penguin, the Joker, Poison Ivy etc.   Don’t forget the Suicide Squad!   Another great group costume idea.
  • Bavarian Beer Maids & Men – These costumes are also found under Oktoberfest costumes and can be a lot of fun to wear.
  • Crayons – You can get some great Crayola costumes (although these are designed for ladies) in various colors so if you all chose a different color you can say you’re a box of crayons, but you lost your box!
  • Ever After High School Pupils
  • Ghosts – You can dress up as a group of ghosts and create your very own haunting!
  • Green Army Men Figures
  • Guess Who ‘People’ – This is a costume that I’ve seen images of and is definitely in the diy Halloween costume column.   If you need instructions check out Homemade Guess Who Characters.
  • Hip Hop Dance Crew – Whether you go with a Jabbawockeez Halloween costume, Remix Monkeys or a dance crew from any of the popular dance themed movies.
  • Lego Minifigures
  • M & Ms – You can actually buy sets of group M&M costumes or you could just buy/make the costumes yourselfs, just make sure you’re all different colors, the room won’t be big enough for two Reds for example!
  • Mickey, Minnie & Friends
  • Monster High Pupils – If you’re after this costume ideas for a group of young girls you can check out – MHS Costumes for Girls.
  • Oompa Loompas – From Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory the Oompa Loompas make a fun costume and I’ve even seen a group of people dressed up as them at an international rugby match in recent years – they certainly stand out on camera!
  • Pac Man – You can buy a set of group costumes (see below for one example) for this idea yourself – they’re available for sets of 5 or 6 and feature Pac Man himself along with the ghosts.
  • Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs
  • Tetris Blocks – This is a very cool costume ideas that is easy to make at home as it simply requires lots of cardboard boxes, paint and black electrical tape.   There are lots of pages that show you how to make them online, here’s one of them – The Diary of Tetris.
  • The Smurfs
  • The Tudors – You can dress as a group of Tudor peasants or a group of Tudor aristocrats for a fun costume idea.   If you wanted to you could also dress as famous Tudor people whether it’s Henry VIII and all six of his wives or all of the Tudor monarchs together is up to you!
  • The Wiggles – a pair of black trousers and different colored skivvies are all you need to be The Wiggles and if there’s more than four of you in the group then you can get one of you to dress up as Captain Feathersword, another as Dorothy the Dinosaur and just keep working through these favorite children’s characters until your group are all in fancy dress……..watch out though if you’re too good you might get booked for a child’s birthday party!
  • Winnie the Pooh & Friends

Pac Man Group Costume Set

Pac Man Group Costume Idea
This is a classic group costume idea for six people. Featuring Pac Man himself along with the four ghosts and one ghost that’s ready to be eaten!

The great thing about this costume idea is that all of the costumes are unisex so it really doesn’t matter what the make up of your group is – all male, all female or a mixed bunch.

I do love the idea of this costume as I’m an eighties girl at heart and Pacman has certainly become known as THE video game of the decade (in all honesty I preferred Space Invaders, but Pacman obviously had a better PR person behind them!!)

Costumes Beginning with G

Costumes Starting with G

Are you looking for costumes beginning with G? I’ve compiled together as many costume ideas as I could find that begin with the letter G – why you might add, well let me tell you about Alphabet Parties.

During my early 20s I was invited to a number of Alphabet Parties – Alphabet Parties are basically a party where you’re given a letter of the alphabet and you have to dress up as something beginning with that letter. I loved these parties I think it’s a great theme for a fancy dress party and so I’ve compiled a number of pages in an attempt to promote the idea so that more people can enjoy the fun.

NOTE: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases – more information below

The page you’ve found today has all of the fancy dress ideas I could think of that begin with the letter G, I’m sure there’s some I’ve missed so I welcome ideas from you in my guestbook at the bottom of the page – have fun in your costume whether you choose a ghost or a go go girl or something completely different.

  • G I Jane
  • G I Joe
  • Gangster – now gangster could mean just about anything in a costume as it does just mean a member of a gang, but whenever I think of a gangster costume I think of the old time gangsters of the 20s with the pinstripe suits and firearms.
  • Gangster Moll – As with the gangster costume above I always think of the 1920 gangster molls for a costume so get out your flapper dress, shake those pearls and don’t forget to pop a pistol into your bag in case things turn ugly!
  • Gardener
  • Gargoyle – depending who you speak to a gargoyle could be an architectural feature on a building to act as a spout or a mythical creature, personally I like to go with the mythological side, but either way it can be a great costume idea. I’ve recently discovered that you can buy a gargoyle costume, but I think it’s a fun diy costume idea. Wear grey clothing and use grey paint on your body, face and hair, some touches of green can be good if it can look like moss. Most gargoyles have a grotesque looking face so a mask is a great idea and there are lots of gargoyle masks available, or use any grotesque looking mask, preferably grey in color.
  • Geisha – in order to properly carry off this costume you do have to remember that make up is essential. Geisha’s use a wax base and then make up to create a white face which then had extra make-up added to give the eyes and mouth effect. For tips on how to apply Geisha make up you can check out – How to Apply Geisha Makeup
  • Gene Simmons – the lead singer of KISS how much fun would this costume be?
  • Genghis Khan
  • Genie

&

Genghis Khan Adult Costume Women’s Genie In A Bottle Costume Gene Simmons – Kiss Costume

&

  • George Washington
  • Georgian Lady or Man – If you love the Georgian or Regency fashion styles from the times of Jane Austin then this could be a great costume idea. A white wig is essential, of course, but what about the actual costumes? I must admit while there are a few ready made Georgian costumes available to purchase the majority of these costumes that I’ve seen have been handmade.
  • Ghost – Ghosts are a great idea for costumes whether you’re an adult or a child, a girl or a boy which is why they have their own post dedicated to cool ghostly outfits….
    Ghost Costumes
When I was younger dressing up as a ghost was the thing to do if you left it until the last minute to sort out your fancy dress costume. There was no going t…
  • Ghostbusters – Ghostbusters were a classic 80s movie and this costume would be just at home at an 80s party as it would a G party or even just to go trick and treating on Halloween with.  Check out my Ghostbusters post for cool costume ideas.
  • Ginger Spice – this outspoken Spice Girl is a popular costume choice, you can get one of Geri’s costumes on my Spice Girl Costume post
  • Gingerbread Man
  • Giraffe
  • Gladiator
  • Glam Rock Singer – this could be a rather generic costume or just dress up as one of your favourite Glam Rock singers from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust to Gary Glitter, Alice Cooper or more.
  • Glee Cheerleader
  • Gnomes
  • Gods – The Greeks and Romans had a god or goddess for almost every aspect of their lives. Typically their gods (or goddesses) would be dressing in white robes/togas edged with gold or silver trim. Defining which deity you are can be done with accessories for example Diana would carry a bow and arrow. Then there are Norse gods so if you want to give your Thor costume an airing this is your chance!Of course if you can’t decide between the gods available in Greek, Roman or Norse lore then you could always put on a long robe, a white beard and just play the Old Testament version of god.
  • Goldilocks
  • Golfer
  • Gomez – Gomez Addams is a person who needs no introduction and you can find a costume for him on my Addams Family Costume post
  • Gondolier – from the canals of Venice come the singing Gondoliers, gentling manoevering the gondola’s around the waterways of Venice – traditionally dressed in blank trousers, a black and white striped top with a red necktie and red sash acting as a belt, top the costume off with a straw hat featuring a red ribbon.I should mention that when I was in Venice I also saw a few that just wore black trousers, a red and white striped top and a straw hat with red ribbon so…
  • Gorilla
  • Goth
  • Gotham Girl – As you’d suspect a Gotham Girl is from Gotham City, the home of Batman, it’s actually an American Flash Animation series that focused on several of the female characters that hailed from Gotham City. These characters include Batgirl, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn. Dress up as either of these powerful women or better yet make this a group costume idea!

&

Harley Quinn Costume Adult Catwoman Costume Poison Ivy Costume

&

    • Grapes – you can purchase your own grape costume in both green or purple, but I know many people have successfully made their own diy grape costume and it’s actually very easy to do.First you’ll need to wear a body suit and then you need to have the lung capacity to blow up a lot of balloons.Simply attach the balloons all over your body suit (making sure they’re all either green or purple or red depending on the type of grape you want to be) and you have a home made bunch of grapes costumeI would also add a pair of the appropriate colored tights or leggings as well.
    • Green Hornet
    • Green Lantern
    • Grim Reaper

&

Deluxe Green Hornet Costume Green Lantern Hal Jordan Costume Grim Reaper Costume, Black

&

      • Groucho Marx
      • Guinevere
      • Gunslinger – evoke the Wild Wild West with your best cowboy for hire costume!
      • Gypsy – there are a lot of different gypsy costumes available to buy or you can create your own. I had to come up with a costume idea at short notice a few years ago so I chose to dress up as a gypsy. I wore a loose peasant blouse, long skirt and draped a scarf over my head, then I armed myself with some cards and ‘pretended’ to read everyone’s future in the cards – a fun night and easy costume.

  • Bob the Builder
  • Bollywood Star
  • Bonnie Parker – of Bonnie and Clyde fame; dress up in 1930s fashion and carry a handgun (a pretend one, it is a party you’re going to after all).
  • (A) Box – the easiest of all costumes, just pop yourself in a box!
  • Boxer
  • Boy George – a classic 80s costume idea, you can find a ready-made Boy George costume on my 80s Costumes Ideas for Men, alternatively, you just need dreadlocks, makeup and a long duster coat!
  • Brave
  • Braveheart
  • Bride – you can go as a classic bride, an undead bride, Bride of Chucky or Bride of Frankenstein
  • Britannia – I don’t think that there’s an actual Britannia costume so you could wear a Union Jack dress and call yourself Britannia or you could wear a long robe with a Roman-style helmet, trident and Union Jack shield as a cross between the British warrior queen, Boadicea and a goddess of war with a little nod to Britain with the Union Jack. If you can’t get a Union Jack shield then just use a plain shield, but have the Union Jack like a cape essentially a British superhero!
  • Britney Spears
  • Buccaneer – a buccaneer is essentially another name for a pirate so if you need more inspiration then check out my pirate costume page.
  • Buddha
  • Buddy Holly
  • Buddy the Elf
  • Buffalo Bill
  • Bugs Bunny
  • Bumblebee
  • Bunny
  • Bunny Girl – this is a very easy costume to pull off in fact my father managed to pull this off for a party when I was a teenager, I remember because I had to help him paint his nails red! Simply wear a leotard with bunny ears and a white cottontail on your bottom. Wear high heels and walk with a wiggle!
  • Burglar – as a last-minute costume this is a good one, dark clothes and a ski mask is all you’ll need.
  • Burlesque Babe
  • Butler
  • Butterfly
  • Buzz Lightyear

I hope you’ve found some great ideas here for costumes beginning with B, if you’re after costume ideas for different letters then you need to visit my A-Z of costumes page.
