The Village People Costumes

The Village People – An Instantly Recognizable Group Costume Idea

The Village People Costumes

The Village People

A really fun idea for a group at Halloween is to dress up in The Village People Costumes.  This is definitely one of the more popular and fun group costume ideas!

I don’t know what it is about these outfits. but on the few occasions that I’ve seen people dress up as The Village People it’s always brought a smile to my face and I know I’m not the only one affected in that way.

So who were the Village People? A group known for bringing earwig songs into the charts such as the eternal YMCA as well as Macho Man & In The Navy.

This colorful American disco group dressed up as a native American, soldier (sometimes a member of the navy instead), a cop, a construction worker, a cowboy and a biker/leatherman.

Village People Cowboy Outfit

Yeeha – This is a Fun Village People Costume!

The cowboy outfit hasn’t changed that much over the years despite different people ‘playing the role’, one thing to remember though is that The Village People were formed in the 70s which means that with this costume you should also add a moustache that Ron Burgundy would be proud of!

Men’s Fringe Cowboy Costume

This costume includes the waistcoat, chaps, neckerchief and hat which means that you’ll have to supply the sheriff’s badge, jeans, boots, moustache and shirt.
Below you’ll find a perfect moustache for jolting you straight back to the seventies, absolutely perfect for wearing when you’re singing YMCA!
I’ve sourced a checked flannel shirt for you to add to the costume, but you could use any casual shirt that’s in your wardrobe. I just don’t think you can beat the old checked flannel shirt for a cool cowboy costume though.
I’ve also managed to find you a sheriff’s badge to complete your costume in style, so which hit do you want to sing first? “…in the navy, you can sail the seven seas….”

Village People Indian Chief Costume

Just One of the Popular Village People Costume Ideas

This is an officially licensed costume that is ‘supposed’ to be based on the native American costume that’s worn by a member of the Village People, however it’s quite different from the one I remember from YMCA days. The one I remember wore jeans and a suede fringed jacket (very 70s frontierman look!) along with the headdress, war paint and cool boots.

Smiffys Village People Indian Costume Adult

This costume includes the headdress, loincloth, chestplate and boot covers. If you want to you could wear this and when you’re with the other members of the group you’ll still be recognizable as members of The Village People.

Village People Cop Outfit

As different people came and went in the group the costumes changed a few times as well. This officially licensed Village People costume is based on the original highway patrol uniform that was worn, but a blue police uniform has also been worn at times over the years so if you have a different police uniform on hand feel free to wear it instead.

Village People Motorcycle Cop (Standard)

This official costume includes the shirt, trousers, boot covers, helmet and belt which is all you really need. If you want to add a little extra then a black pleather jacket would be good along with a pair of handcuffs hanging off of the belt.

You also want to make sure you have a few shirt buttons undone (it was the 70s, the decade of men baring chest hair …..) and add a few dangling gold chains.

Village People Biker Costume

One of the More Popular of The Village People Costumes!

This official costume includes the chaps, top, hat and even harness (well not a ‘real’ one, just a plastic one that looks like the real deal!). All you’ll need to add is a pair of jeans or trousers, your disco dancing boots and the most important thing a very 70s moustache!

Village People Biker (Standard)

Not only is this an officially licensed costume it even says ‘The Village People’ on the hat – just in case anyone couldn’t identify you!

Village People Construction Worker Outfit

This costume set includes the shirt, belt, hat and sunglasses so that all you need to do is harmonize with the rest of the group, think of the words to the song Macho Man to get yourself in the zone and you’ll be halfway there.

Smiffys Village People Construction Worker Costume – Adult

All you need to add is jeans, boots and let’s not forget a cool looking 70s mo!

Village People Navy Costume

When I think of the Village People I always envisage a soldier in the ranks (probably because of the YMCA video), but the soldier was often replaced by a naval man. The costume below is an officially licensed Village People costume, but they’ve also had someone who was dressed more like an officer on some occasion.

This outfit includes the top, trousers and hat which is all you really need to be one sixth of The Village People.

An Army Serviceman Instead?

Alternative Village People Costume Idea

If you don’t like the navy costume for whatever reason, or you just happen to have some fatigues lying around then why not dress up as a soldier instead?

If you don’t have the gear then take these items below and team them with a pair of lace up black boots and the words to a few songs (better skip In The Navy though as it might not seem quite right) and join the rest of your group for a great night out.

Do You Have YMCA Stuck in Your Head Now?

I must admit I wasn’t a fan of YMCA, but whenever I heard it I couldn’t get it out of my head. I hadn’t heard it for a few years until my daughter’s first school disco in primary school when the organizers decided to infiltrate our kid’s heads with this earwig song.

If you haven’t heard of the expression earwig song it basically means a song that gets stuck in your head and won’t get out. Now there is a cure, but unfortunately that cure has a side effect…….. simply start humming The Birdie Song and it’ll get rid of any earwig song you have – the side effect is that you’re often left with The Birdie Song stuck in there instead!

These days I don’t mind hearing the song as I get a touch nostalgic when it’s played ….. and I remember how cute it was watching my daughter dance to it!!

Get Yourself in the Mood!

YMCA Original Music Video

Get yourself in the mood with the original music video as you’re getting ready to go out…….. even if you’ve decided NOT to dress up as the Village People I’m sure you want to listen to the song again don’t you?

The Village People Halloween costumes are a great idea for a fun group costume that is instantly recognizable.

Costumes Beginning with G

Costumes Starting with G

Are you looking for costumes beginning with G? I’ve compiled together as many costume ideas as I could find that begin with the letter G – why you might add, well let me tell you about Alphabet Parties.

During my early 20s I was invited to a number of Alphabet Parties – Alphabet Parties are basically a party where you’re given a letter of the alphabet and you have to dress up as something beginning with that letter. I loved these parties I think it’s a great theme for a fancy dress party and so I’ve compiled a number of pages in an attempt to promote the idea so that more people can enjoy the fun.

The page you’ve found today has all of the fancy dress ideas I could think of that begin with the letter G, I’m sure there’s some I’ve missed so I welcome ideas from you in my guestbook at the bottom of the page – have fun in your costume whether you choose a ghost or a go go girl or something completely different.

  • G I Jane
  • G I Joe
  • Gangster – now gangster could mean just about anything in a costume as it does just mean a member of a gang, but whenever I think of a gangster costume I think of the old time gangsters of the 20s with the pinstripe suits and firearms.
  • Gangster Moll – As with the gangster costume above I always think of the 1920 gangster molls for a costume so get out your flapper dress, shake those pearls and don’t forget to pop a pistol into your bag in case things turn ugly!
  • Gardener
  • Gargoyle – depending who you speak to a gargoyle could be an architectural feature on a building to act as a spout or a mythical creature, personally I like to go with the mythological side, but either way it can be a great costume idea. I’ve recently discovered that you can buy a gargoyle costume, but I think it’s a fun diy costume idea. Wear grey clothing and use grey paint on your body, face and hair, some touches of green can be good if it can look like moss. Most gargoyles have a grotesque looking face so a mask is a great idea and there are lots of gargoyle masks available, or use any grotesque looking mask, preferably grey in color.
  • Geisha – in order to properly carry off this costume you do have to remember that make up is essential. Geisha’s use a wax base and then make up to create a white face which then had extra make-up added to give the eyes and mouth effect. For tips on how to apply Geisha make up you can check out – How to Apply Geisha Makeup
  • Gene Simmons – the lead singer of KISS how much fun would this costume be?
  • Genghis Khan
  • Genie

  • George Washington
  • Georgian Lady or Man – If you love the Georgian or Regency fashion styles from the times of Jane Austin then this could be a great costume idea. A white wig is essential, of course, but what about the actual costumes? I must admit while there are a few ready made Georgian costumes available to purchase the majority of these costumes that I’ve seen have been handmade.
  • Ghost – Ghosts are a great idea for costumes whether you’re an adult or a child, a girl or a boy which is why they have their own post dedicated to cool ghostly outfits….

When I was younger dressing up as a ghost was the thing to do if you left it until the last minute to sort out your fancy dress costume. There was no going t…
  • Ghostbusters – Ghostbusters were a classic 80s movie and this costume would be just at home at an 80s party as it would a G party or even just to go trick and treating on Halloween with.  Check out my Ghostbusters post for cool costume ideas.
  • Ginger Spice – this outspoken Spice Girl is a popular costume choice, you can get one of Geri’s costumes on my Spice Girl Costume post
  • Gingerbread Man
  • Giraffe
  • Gladiator
  • Glam Rock Singer – this could be a rather generic costume or just dress up as one of your favourite Glam Rock singers from David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust to Gary Glitter, Alice Cooper or more.
  • Glee Cheerleader
  • Gnomes
  • Gods – The Greeks and Romans had a god or goddess for almost every aspect of their lives. Typically their gods (or goddesses) would be dressing in white robes/togas edged with gold or silver trim. Defining which deity you are can be done with accessories for example Diana would carry a bow and arrow. Then there are Norse gods so if you want to give your Thor costume an airing this is your chance!Of course if you can’t decide between the gods available in Greek, Roman or Norse lore then you could always put on a long robe, a white beard and just play the Old Testament version of god.
  • Goldilocks
  • Golfer
  • Gomez – Gomez Addams is a person who needs no introduction and you can find a costume for him on my Addams Family Costume post
  • Gondolier – from the canals of Venice come the singing Gondoliers, gentling manoevering the gondola’s around the waterways of Venice – traditionally dressed in blank trousers, a black and white striped top with a red necktie and red sash acting as a belt, top the costume off with a straw hat featuring a red ribbon.I should mention that when I was in Venice I also saw a few that just wore black trousers, a red and white striped top and a straw hat with red ribbon so…
  • Gorilla
  • Goth
  • Gotham Girl – As you’d suspect a Gotham Girl is from Gotham City, the home of Batman, it’s actually an American Flash Animation series that focused on several of the female characters that hailed from Gotham City. These characters include Batgirl, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn. Dress up as either of these powerful women or better yet make this a group costume idea!

    • Grapes – you can purchase your own grape costume in both green or purple, but I know many people have successfully made their own diy grape costume and it’s actually very easy to do.First you’ll need to wear a body suit and then you need to have the lung capacity to blow up a lot of balloons.Simply attach the balloons all over your body suit (making sure they’re all either green or purple or red depending on the type of grape you want to be) and you have a home made bunch of grapes costumeI would also add a pair of the appropriate colored tights or leggings as well.
    • Green Hornet
    • Green Lantern
    • Grim Reaper

&

      • Groucho Marx
      • Guinevere
      • Gunslinger – evoke the Wild Wild West with your best cowboy for hire costume!
      • Gypsy – there are a lot of different gypsy costumes available to buy or you can create your own. I had to come up with a costume idea at short notice a few years ago so I chose to dress up as a gypsy. I wore a loose peasant blouse, long skirt and draped a scarf over my head, then I armed myself with some cards and ‘pretended’ to read everyone’s future in the cards – a fun night and easy costume.

Great selection of costume ideas beginning with the letter G
