Ghost Costumes – A Halloween Costume Idea

Ghost Fancy Dress Costumes

Ghost CostumesWhen I was younger dressing up as a ghost was the thing to do if you left it until the last minute to sort out your fancy dress costume.

There was no going to a costume shop for a ghost outfit, you just got one of your’ mum’s old white sheets and threw it over yourself. Most mums would let you cut eyes out so that you can see, but it could be fun not doing that!!

Now the days of the sheet are getting further away as there are some amazing ghost costumes on the market which make our old sheet costumes laughable!

The Ghost Cape

This Ghost Cape is great to add another layer onto your ghost costume and has a lovely sheer, ghost-like quality to it, but it’s also handy for other situations…….have you ever been the only person to dress up in costume in your group?

Ghost Cape CostumeGhost Cape Costume

There was one year when my friends decided that they wouldn’t dress up after all, but somehow the communications broke down and no-one told me or another friend.
Luckily for my other friend all he had to do was take a flower out of his back pocket – I on the other hand was stuck as the only person in fancy dress in our group 🙁
The moral of the story is to be prepared and this Ghost Cape can help you with that – wear a white dress underneath and you look like a ghost, but if no-one else is dressed up simply take off the cape and you’re ready to party!

Ghost Costumes for Adults

There are some pretty scary looking ghosts available with white or grey flowing material they are sure to make you jump in fright when they creep up behind you!

Ghosts are supposed to be spirits of the dead who don’t realise that they are dead and so they’re busy walking around wondering what on earth you’re doing there.

Why would we suddenly think that ghosts would be a fairly shapless white floating thing? Personally I would think that if the ghost managed to show form it would be more human like.

Ghost Make Up

It’s universally agreed that a ghost would not look the same as you and I because their blood no longer flows and they’re cold. This would give them a pale, grey look to their face. The ghost look is easy to achieve with the right make-up.

MAC 6 beauties PLAY IT COOL eye shadowMAC 6 beauties PLAY IT COOL eye shadow

If you want to look like quite a gaunt ghost then use the grey shadow under your cheekbones to accent the ‘scary, haven’t eaten for centuries’ look.
Eyes should have dark circles under them as ghosts don’t sleep. I would use grey or blue under the eyes and black on the lids along with black eye liner.
As far as lips go remember that ghosts are cold so they’re unlikely to have pink lips instead try a burgandy color for the goth effect or a nude color, even a blue tint would work well.

Ghosts Masks

Completing a Ghost Costume

Sometimes it’s hard to get the right look with make-up or time is precious so wearing a mask is a great compromise. Here are some really scary ghosts masks that you really don’t want to hear say Boo!

Halloween Costume Ideas – Costumes Beginning with J

Fancy Dress Ideas That Begin with the Letter J

Selection of costumes beginning with the letter JHave you ever been to an alphabet party? When I was in my early 20s they were all the rage, somehow everytime I was invited to one it was always a P party which meant dressing up as something beginning with the letter P. You can choose any letter of the alphabet however and today I’ve chosen the letter J.

Fancy dress parties or costume parties are so much more fun when they’re themed, but you don’t always want to have an 80s party, or even a Star Wars themed party. Choosing a letter to base your party around is fun because seeing how people interpret it can be really interesting…..some people really know how to think outside of the box.

There are some great costumes that begin with the letter J, but one which you may find easy to go as if it’s a last minute idea is James Bond.   Provided you can say, “The name’s Bond, James Bond,” and you don’t mind drinking martinis all night this is a pretty easy costume as it only requires a suit or a tux – add a toy gun and you’re licenced to thrill!

Let’s look at a few other costume ideas….

Costumes Beginning with J – The List

  • Jabba the Hutt
  • Jabbawockeez Costume – This dance crew is famous for wearing masks, you can dress up as a simple member or use it as a group costume idea.
  • Jack the Ripper – The real Jack the Ripper was never caught, but that doesn’t stop him from becoming a Halloween costume!
  • Jackie Kennedy Onassis
  • Jackson Five – A great group costume idea if you’re going with friends
  • Jake Sully – Jake Sully is the true blue hero of the hit movie Avatar (sorry I couldn’t resist that pun!) and is a fun fancy dress costume to wear.
  • James Bond – Add a suit, a gun and introduce yourself as Bond, James Bond and you’ll be licensed to have fun all night!
  • James Dean
  • Jane – ‘Me Tarzan, you Jane,’ this is a classic ‘J’ costume for women. The Jane costume featured below doesn’t come with the spear, but personally I would look at getting one as a prop because it really adds to it.
  • Jango Fett – Star Wars costumes are always a hit at parties. It’s hard to believe that the very first Star Wars movie was released back in 1977.
The whole Star Wars franchise still has a hoard of faithful followers around the globe. If you’re one of them then this costume is just one of the ‘J’ costumes available for you.
  • Jason (Friday 13th)

&

  • Jeannie (I Dream of Jeannie)
  • Jedi Knight
  • Jessica Rabbit
  • Jessie (Toy Story) – From the hugely successful Toy Story movies comes Jessie. What more can I say? The Toy Story franchise continues to be hugely popular which means that this is a ‘J’ costume that will be instantly recognized by children and parents alike!
  • Jessie J
  • Jester – A court Jester is a fun and bright costume idea that should bring a smile to everyone’s face. Sporting events often see Team Jester Hats worn by supporters so if you’re trying to put together a quick costume you ‘might’ get away with wearing one of those. – Check out a collection of Court Jester costumes here!
  • Jesus
  • Jigsaw Puppet – The movie Saw gave us the protaganist Jigsaw when it became an unexpected box office hit which followed with another 5 movies.
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Joan of Arc – I love the idea of dressing up as Joan of Arc, forget mythical super heroes this is a girl who kicked some serious $#@*. While I always think of the warrior style of costumes that are sold as Joan of Arc costumes another idea would be to create one with a pole at your back and a pile of wood at your feet with crepe paper flames leaping up – now that would be a cool costume idea – Joan of Arc burning at the stake!

  • Jockey
  • Joker – The Joker is one of the classic Batman villains. The late Heath Ledger did an outstanding job of portraying the Joker on the big screen before his death which is why this is the most popular version of the Joker costume out there.  Now that the Suicide Squad has been made into a movie there’s yet another version of the Joker to choose from!
  • Josephine – If you’re feeling like a historical period costume then what about Napoleon’s Empress Josephine? If your friends know their history they will know who you are if not….
  • Juliet – If you want to go around saying ‘Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou Romeo/’ or words to that effect then the romantic Juliet from Romeo and Juliet is the costume for you!
  • Julius Caesar – One of the most famous of the Roman Emperors.

Halloween Trick or Treat Pails & Bags

Trick or TreatingNow when it comes to Trick or Treating it’s very important to take something with you to collect all of the candy in.   Now to be perfectly honest if I had been able to go trick or treating when I was a child then I’d have been quite happy with a shopping bag as long as it was big enough!

There are lots of cool pails to choose from as well as bags, personally the reusable canvas bags are great for going trick or treating with and as a parent I know they’ll fold away nicely for next year.   Sometimes though the children want a special pail or bucket because it’s licensed with one of their favorite characters or because that’s what their best friends have.

Trick or Treat Pails

There are some really cool trick or treat pails available and my daughter used to like a bucket as opposed to a bag because she found it easier to swing it as she walked (or sort of skipped) between houses!

There are some really cool trick or treat buckets available however from the simple pumpkin decorated plastic bucket below to licensed buckets.  Pumpkin or Jack O Lantern inspired pails are a classic and you can even get glow in the dark ones too –

Glow-in-the-dark Jack-o-lantern Treat Pails with Carrying Handles Pumpkin Candy Holder 12 Mini Trick-or-treat Halloween Candy Bucket Halloween Orange Jack-o-lantern Treat Pails Ready for Trick-or-treaters

&

The other option is to get a licensed pail or one that matches whatever costume your child is going to be wearing there really is a trick or treating pail to suit everyone.

A constant favorite every Halloween seems to be Star Wars inspired trick or treating buckets including –

The Darth Vader Trick or Treat Pail

I have never got a Darth Vader bucket, but every year I see at least one Darth Vader Trick or Treat pail on my travels.   There are a few different versions that i have seen available in shops, but the one I see the kids with is the Darth Vader helmet shaped pail so if your child loves Star Wars (and hasn’t already got one of these) then you need to check out this trick or treat bucket –

Reusable Trick or Treat Bags

Canvas Trick or Treat Bags

Now if your child is anything like I was as a kid then I didn’t care what I collected the candy in I just wanted the sweet stuff, if that’s the case then I recommend a canvas bag. Now there are lots of cheap plastic trick or treat bags available, but if you want to get something you can reuse over several years then, personally, I think canvas is the way to go.

There are a range of different Halloween bags available from the licensed ones that your child may grow out of to the Halloween themed trick or treat bags I’ve found for you here –

TRICK OR TREAT TOTE BAG Personalized Trick or Treat Bag Pumpkin Tote Personalized Halloween Candy Bag Trick or Treat Personalized Trick or Treat Witch Bag Haunted House Halloween Trick Or Treat Canvas Bag Cute Vampire Trick or Treat Bag Market Tote Candy Corn Critters Reusable Grocery Bag Pumpkin Headed Ghost Trick or Treat Bag Cute Witch Trick or Treat Tote Bag

&

Another great thing about these canvas trick or treat bags is that they can be personalized which some kids absolutely love.

Halloween Hedge Lights

Spooky Halloween Lights

When it comes to creating a spooky atmosphere never underestimate the power of lighting…….and a fog machine comes in pretty handy as well!   There are lots of different ways to add Halloween lights to your decor, but let’s start with the walkway up to your house and set the scene for what’s ahead <cue>spooky music</cue>

On the Halloween Party Lights post I actually share with you a way to create home made Halloween lights to place along the path leading to your house, but there are lots of other ways in which you can decorate your garden path.

These Halloween hedge lights however will really add some spookiness to your pathway.

 Haunted Hedge (Standard)

If you have a hedge, bushes or even a few potted plants you can really creep your guests out with the haunted hedges eyes above.   What could be hiding in the plants ready to jump out at them?    It will also fill them with trepidation wondering what else may be lurking around your spooky house.

Another option which is really cool is the spooky eyes  – see them in action below!

Buy the Spooky Eyes here and add some fright into your Halloween!

Other ways of decorating your pathway can be with Halloween string lights in your trees, lighted cauldrons or even light-up animated props on your front lawn.   Check out my Halloween Party Lights site above to get more ideas on how to really light up your Halloween decorating.

Costumes Beginning with I

Fancy Dress Ideas Starting with I

Have you ever been to an alphabet party? When I was in my early 20s they were all the rage, somehow everytime I was invited to one it was always a P party which meant dressing up as something beginning with the letter P. You can choose any letter of the alphabet however and today I’ve chosen the letter I.

Fancy dress parties or costume parties are so much more fun when they’re themed, but you don’t always want to have an 80s party or a dazzling 1920s event. When it comes to the letter I you can dress up as things such as an ice cream, iron man or even Indiana Jones!

Costumes Beginning with I – The List!

  • Icarus
  • Ice Cream Costumes -Who doesn’t love ice cream? I know personally I love it in a myriad of flavors, but as a costume? Well it didn’t cross my mind until I was thinking of things that started with I, luckily other people had already thought of ice cream costumes as you can see from the selection below –

Ice Cream Cone Costume Set – One Size Rasta Imposta Ice Cream Sundae, Multi, One Size

&

  • Ice Queen
  • Icon – this could be a physical icon such as the Statue of Liberty or Eiffel Tower or it could mean an icon of the silver screen like Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn or even pop icons like Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson or Madonna or sporting icons……it almost gives you carte blanche!
  • Imp
  • Imperial Guard – The Imperial Guard is one of the many types of soldiers from Star Wars, and although probably not a first choice for a costume idea, it wouldn’t be too hard to do. I don’t know about your group of friends, but I’ve found in most there’s at least one person who always wants to have a Star Wars themed costume, so they’ll be happy!
  • Incredible Hulk – This costume has seen a surge in popularity since the Avenger’s movie franchise started up again. I’ve been a fan of the Hulk since the television program and love the costumes that you can now get that include the chest torso, although the sizes do seem to be on the small side by all accounts so get one early in case you need to change sizes.

Star Wars Imperial Guard Costume Ladies Eiffel Tower Costume Dress Avengers 2 Age Of Ultron Adult Hulk Costume

  • Incredibles – The Incredibles costumes gives you a chance to become Mr and Mrs Incredible if you want a couples costume for an ‘I’ party or even a whole super hero family if you’re after a group costume idea.
  • Indian – From the old fashioned name for a Native American to Raj from The Big Bang Theory there’s a few different twists you can make on this costume idea.
  • Indiana Jones
  • Inspector Gadget – You can get a ready to wear costume or compile your own – a grey trench coat, fedora hat and neat black shoes is the start. Then you just have to work out how to add some gadget detailing to the hat, personally I’d get a ready made costume, but I know a coupld of people who would love spending the time creating and Inspector Gadget hat!
  • Invisible Woman – Invisible Woman is one of the Fantastic Four, who can turn her body invisible, now I’m not sure how you’d manage that for a fancy dress event, but you could wear a blue jumpsuit with a ‘4’ logo on the front as in the movies she wears these – they’re also available as an official Marvel Comics costume.
  • Irish Leprechaun
  • Iron Man – Since Robert Downey Jr first pulled on the Iron Man suit this superhero has never been more popular, there’s also an updated version of the Iron Man costume after every movie!
