Halloween Party Lighting – How to Create Atmosphere

How Will You Set the Mood This Halloween?  Spooky Halloween Party Lighting

Your Halloween party lighting is one of the key things in creating that perfect atmosphere.  My favorite part of Halloween is creating a spooky effect in the home or as part of your party decor and Halloween party lights can help you to achieve this.

Halloween party lighting can be used in several different ways – to light up the path to your house, outside for an outside party or even inside your house for a Halloween party or dinner with friends.

There are lots of different types of Halloween party lights that you can use – spider lights, pumpkin lights, ghost lights and so many more, I hope I’ve managed to give you a really good all round selection on this page – you can even make your own party lights with a few plastic drink containers which is really cool.

If you have party lights at home that aren’t necessarily Halloween lights then think outside of the box as to ways of incorporating them in your decor to great effect.   If you remember my post on Creating a Bloody Bathroom it was suggested on there that you could use a strobe light behind the shower curtain to add another dimension.

Draping cobwebs over party lights can be another solution.   If you have spooky cups, mugs, glasses etc that you’re not planning on using to serve drinks then you could pop tea lights in them and have them scattered around to add a soft glow around the room.   The ideas are endless, but one thing is for sure adding some thought to how you use light at your Halloween party will add a lot to the atmosphere!

Lighting Up The Path

Halloween Party Lights

First we need to look at how to light up the garden path leading people up to your front door and there are a few different ideas for this.

One idea is to create your own lights which are really easy to do.

The other option is to buy lights designed to be put along the pathway and there are a few different options for these.

Creating You Own Halloween Party Lights

One of the easiest ways to light the path is by reusing your old plastic milk/juice bottles. We usually have the clear heavy plastic 2 lt milk cartons at home so we cut them off near the top and wash them out ready to use as party lights. Place a little sand in the bottom and pop in a tea light, the effect is great, but you can add to it by adding colored cellophane in black, orange and purple for a Halloween feel (we’ve also used green and red for Christmas).

Easy to make, looks great and you’re even recycling those old plastic containers – what’s not to love about this way to light up your path?

One cool idea that my dd wants us to try is this next one –

color changing ghost light

Color Changing Ghost Light

This ghost will light up the pathway and also give your guests a fright at the same time!

What Halloween Party Lights Would You Like?

There are so many different types of Halloween lights available that you really need to think of what theme you want to embrace – spiders, witches, skulls, pumpkins and more.   Let’s have a look at some of the selection available.

Costumes Beginning with F

Fancy Dress Outfits Starting with the Letter F

Fred Flintstone - a cool costume idea beginning with FIf you’re looking for costumes beginning with F for a themed party then I’ve compiled a great list for you from Fred Flintstone to a French Maid.

I’ve compiled this page with a range of others as I used to attend alphabet parties in my 20s and they were so much fun. I read a few years ago that they were making a comeback so for those of you who draw a blank when you have to come up with ideas for costume party here’s your resource list

NOTE: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases – more information below

Cool Costumes Beginning with F

  • Fairy – a classic little girls costume, but there’s also costumes for grown ups as well – I especially think men can dress up as the tooth fairy after the Rock’s performance!
  • Fairy Godmother
  • Fame character – go back to the 80s with leg warmers, leotards and off the shoulder shirts
  • Fat B**stard – A character from Austin Powers, I seem to know a lot of people who enjoy talking like the Fat B**stard so I’m sure they’d love to dress up as him as well.
  • Father Christmas
  • Father Time – Wear long robes for this costume, some people depict him in white robes while others show him in black robes, what all costumes show is a big timepiece hanging around his neck.
  • FBI officer – wear the standard issue black suit and look like a fed or wear regular clothes and just flash your badge if you want to be an undercover agent, just don’t forget to talk into your watch and wear an ear piece.
  • Fester Addams aka Uncle Fester – Uncle Fester, the Addams Family hasn’t been on air for years and yet they’re all instantly recognizable.
  • Fiona (Shrek)
  • Fireman
  • Fisherman – you can dress up in yellow wet weather gear as though you’re a trawler fisherman or else you can wear waders and carry a bag with a few feathers on hooks on it (along with a fishing rod that is) and say you’re a trout fisherman.
  • Flamenco Dancer
  • Flamingo
  • Flapper – there are lots of different Flapper outfits to choose from as well as loads of fun accessories from headbands to long beads, boas or cigarette holders. I love the fashions of the 1920s which is why I love all of the flapper outfits. Check out a whole selection on this page – 1920s Style Flapper Halloween Costumes.

DC Comics Deluxe Muscle Chest The Flash

  • Flash (The) – This superhero has probably gained an even bigger success thanks to the small screen success of the Big Bang Theory where he’s one of Sheldon’s favorite fancy dress outfits.
  • Flight attendant
  • Florence Nightingale – a British nurse from the time of the Crimea war Florence Nightingale is seen as the founder of modern nursing. The outfit you need for this is very much like that of a Victorian scullery maid, including the cap, although rather than the white cotton caps worn by maids, Florence Nightingale’s one was more of a white lace cap. She was known as the lady of the lamp as she would check on her patients at night so getting a lamp to carry would be a great prop for this costume.
  • Flower – A flower is a great costume for if you want a DIY project. Simply wear green for the stem, add face paint the color you want the middle of the flower head to be and then attach the petals around your face (I would use a piece of elastic to run under your chin and over your head. The petals could be made from tissue paper to cardboard or even fabric.
  • Flower Pot Men – Bill and Ben from the old British cartoon.
  • Flower Power Hippie – embrace your inner 60s child with a ‘peace man’ attitude and flowers in your hair! A little outside of the box thinking again for a cool costume idea.
  • Fly
  • Flying Monkey from Wizard of Oz
  • Football – I’ve actually seen costumes for sale for both an NFL football and a soccer ball, both of which do look like a bit of fun.
  • Footballer – American footballer from your favourite team or a soccer player the choice is yours.
  • Fork – I have seen a fork costume which I think is just priceless

Fortune Teller CostumeFortune Teller Costume

&

  • Fortune Teller
  • Fox
  • Fox Hunter
  • Foxxy Cleopatra (Austin Powers)
  • Frank n Furter (Rocky Horror Picture Show)
  • Frankenstein
  • Frankenstein’s Bride
  • Frankie Stein – a Monster High costume idea, Frankie Stein was one of the original characters from the range.
  • Fred (from Scooby Doo) – Although Fred wasn’t my favourite Scooby character he is still from a cartoon that I loved growing up. It really seems to have struck a chord across generations as my father loved it, I loved it and my daughter loved it!
  • Fred Astaire
  • Fred Flintstone – The main character from the lovable Hanna-Barbera cartoon, The Flintstones.
  • Freddie Mercury
  • Freddy Krueger
  • French Maid
  • Frenchie (from Grease)
  • Friar Tuck
  • Frodo Baggins – a hobbit from Lord of the Rings
  • Frog
  • Fruit – there’s lots of different fruit costumes from apples to limes and more so you can just dress up as your favourite and if anyone says that oranges start with O, you can simply tell them you’re Fruit which starts with F …….. and then start planning an O party so you can re-use your costume!
  • Fuzzy Dice

If you’re after a costume that begins with another letter of the alphabet then I’ve got you covered with that too, simply check out my a-z of costumes page.

Back to the letter F and which costume idea is your favorite?

Great selection of costumes that begin with F from fairies to Freddy Krueger!

Delicious Halloween Treat Ideas – What Treats Are You Making?

Homemade Treats for Halloween – Yummy & Scary!

Trick or Treat Poster

Do you make your own candy or other treats for Halloween? Some years it can be a lot easier just to buy some in, but if you’ve got time there are so many different treats you can make to fill you Halloween candy bowl or even as snacks and finger food for any Halloween party you’re hosting.

You can actually make snacks, candy and other treats based around different themes like spiders, bats, ghosts and more or you can use a combination of ideas to really impress guests and/or trick and treaters.

One of my favorite ways of making Halloween treats is simply to use some of the myriads of spooky chocolate molds, but that’s probably because I’m a chocoholic! Cupcakes are also a sweet treat that my family like me to make for Halloween, but funnily enough they usually get eaten before any trick or treaters make the rounds!

Let’s have a look at some of the delicious Halloween treat recipes I’ve found and a few cool ideas (severed fingers anyone?) that I’ve shared here…….

On this page I’ve included links to lots of yummy recipes along with things like candy molds to help you create some delicious Halloween recipes.

There’s also some great pictures to help give you some cool ideas for bring the yum factor and the eww factor together!

Ghostly Treats – Perfect for Halloween! – Make Your Own Delicious Snacks

Using molds you can make your own Halloween candy or chocolate to whatever shape you like. These ghost candy molds would be great made with white chocolate.

Chocolate Candy Mold – Spooky Ghost

After making these with white chocolate my dd likes to use some dark chocolate to make little eyes on them.

Simply melt the dark chocolate and place in a zip lock plastic bag, cut a small hole in one corner so that you have your own piping bag (make sure it’s not too big or the ‘eyes’ will look weird!), next simply squeeze a dot out for each eye – it really adds to the look of the chocolates.

For more ghostly ideas for a spooky Halloween treat check out these links.

  • Ghost Toasts
Super easy these phantoms make a great finger food idea for any Halloween gathering.
  • Banana Ghosts

There are lots more ways to add a mummy treat to Halloween and here’s one of them –

  • Mummy Cookie Pops
These are essentially cookies on a stick, but they also look so cute that anyone who sees them will totally fall in love with them.

Bony Treats – Skulls That Are Good Enough to Eat!

Bones and skeletons are found in graveyards which makes them staples for Halloween. Again using candy molds are a nice and easy way of creating some fantastic Halloween candy and these skull candy molds are some of the more popular ones sold.

Skull Pop Hard Candy Mold

Candy skulls are also great to serve up for pirate parties.

White chocolate is generally the one to use, but if you drop a little red food coloring into the melted chocolate you can get some hot pink skulls which look cool for a punk princess style of party as well as for a child’s funky Halloween treat.

There are other ways of creating delicious bone treats and here are some of them from salty to sweet.

Edible Eyeball Treats – Food That Really is Watching You!

I’m not sure when eyeballs became part of Halloween, but they can look really yuk …….. and yet taste so delicious! Another way to carry on the ‘eyeball theme’ if you’re holding a party is by making eyeball ice cubes to serve in drinks. If you’re just providing things for trick and treaters then make sure to pop a few toy eyeballs in your candy bowl to give them a little fright as well!

Moving on – here’s some cool recipe links for you –

  • Peanut Butter Eyeballs
Peanut Butter Eyeballs are a holiday variation of a popular candy called Buckeyes.

Corn & Candy Corn – Great Halloween Food

Candy Corn was created in the 1880s and has been a staple of Halloween for as long as I can remember. This confection got it’s name because it mimics the look of North American corn. A very delicious Halloween treat.

Popcorn can also be a great treat at Halloween (or any time – I love my corn!) so here are some candy corn and pop corn inspired Halloween treats for you to enjoy.

  • Candy Corn Balls
A sprinkling of candy corn makes these popcorn balls an extra-special treat. While boiling the syrup is a job for adults only, shaping the balls is a fun activity for little hands.
  • Halloween Popcorn Treats
From Giada at Home are these delicious Halloween popcorn treats…
  • Hot ‘n’ Sweet Kettle Corn
Rachel Ray’s delicious kettle corn treat is great for Halloween.

Pumpkin Inspired Edible Goodies

Pumpkins are a real Halloween tradition from pumpkin as an ingredient to carving out Jack O’ Lanterns. You can make lots of pumpkin inspired treats like pumpkin shaped cakes – big or small. You can even use the cupcake pans to make healthy (or unhealthy!) muffins in the shape of pumpkins. Of course you can’t go past pumpkin shaped candy…..it is supposed to be a Halloween treat after all!

When using candy molds for chocolate pumpkins I use white chocolate with a little orange food dye to make my pumpkin candy look fantastic.

Spider on Web Chocolate Mold

I must profess to loving plain chocolate spiders and with this mold I can make them any day of the year, not just Halloween. In fact my daughter even requested them for her birthday! I simply melt chocolate and mix with sweetened condensed milk before pouring into the molds…….sometimes I’ve just melted the chocolate and poured it into the molds without mixing it with anything else, but the condensed milk adds a lovely sweetness to it.

Zombie Treats for You – The Undead Actually Taste Pretty Good Here!

Zombies may eat brains themselves, but when it comes to snacks for party goers I think zombie themed cupcakes and cookies are a much better idea!

  • Zombie Cupcakes
Zombie cupcakes are a perfectly ghoulish treat to serve up at Halloween and here you will get some great ideas on creating your very own zombie cupcakes
  • Zombie Feet Cookies
These cookies are absolutely awesome – very zombie-ish, including the festering skin of a zombie, perfect Halloween treat.

If you want to continue with the Zombie theme throughout your party or with other recipes you can take on zombie food by thinking of brains. This is especially cool if you’re having some of your children’s friends staying for dinner because meatballs take on a whole new dimension.

Make up meatball mixture as usually and then add some noodles (hokien work really well), make the mixture into balls (bumpy shaped balls work well with lots of noodle in each one) and then cook as normal either in a fry pan (skillet) or in the oven.

Serve the meatballs in a blood sauce tomato sauce and they’ll be eaten up in record speed!

For pudding you can serve up brains jelly by making your jelly in one of these brain ice cube molds.

Then again you can always make some brains cupcakes for the occasion check out this link for Martha Stewart’s take on Brains Cupcakes –

Costumes That Start With The Letter E

Edwardian woman costumeAre you looking for costumes beginning with E? If so you’ve come to the right place as I have an awesome costume collection just for you from Elvis to Elizabeth I and from Edward Scissorhands to an elephant there are some cool costumes that start with E.

I love thinking of different costumes that start with a certain letter which is probably because of the amount of alphabet parties I attended in my early 20s. If you’ve never been to an alphabet party then you don’t know what you’re missing. Alphabet parties are basically a themed fancy dress event whereby you pick a letter of the alphabet like E and everyone has to dress as something beginning with that letter. It’s amazing what people come up with and so much fun.

Regardless of why you need a costume that starts with E, let’s have a look at what fancy dress outfits we’ve found for you….

  • Edwardian Gent or Lady – historical costumes are very popular and with the popularity of shows such as Downtown Abbey (the first season was based in the post-Edwardian era, but some of the costumes were still quite Edwardian in looks) these costumes are bound to be a hit.
  • Egg – there are a few fried egg costumes, but this could also be an Easter egg.
  • Eggplant
  • Egyptian Queen – the most popular Egyptian queen is Cleopatra, and she’s often portrayed wearing the heavy make up that Elizabeth Taylor characterized her in on the silver screen.
  • Einstein
