Halloween Party Lighting – How to Create Atmosphere

How Will You Set the Mood This Halloween?  Spooky Halloween Party Lighting

Your Halloween party lighting is one of the key things in creating that perfect atmosphere.  My favorite part of Halloween is creating a spooky effect in the home or as part of your party decor and Halloween party lights can help you to achieve this.

Halloween party lighting can be used in several different ways – to light up the path to your house, outside for an outside party or even inside your house for a Halloween party or dinner with friends.

There are lots of different types of Halloween party lights that you can use – spider lights, pumpkin lights, ghost lights and so many more, I hope I’ve managed to give you a really good all round selection on this page – you can even make your own party lights with a few plastic drink containers which is really cool.

If you have party lights at home that aren’t necessarily Halloween lights then think outside of the box as to ways of incorporating them in your decor to great effect.   If you remember my post on Creating a Bloody Bathroom it was suggested on there that you could use a strobe light behind the shower curtain to add another dimension.

Draping cobwebs over party lights can be another solution.   If you have spooky cups, mugs, glasses etc that you’re not planning on using to serve drinks then you could pop tea lights in them and have them scattered around to add a soft glow around the room.   The ideas are endless, but one thing is for sure adding some thought to how you use light at your Halloween party will add a lot to the atmosphere!

Lighting Up The Path

Halloween Party Lights

First we need to look at how to light up the garden path leading people up to your front door and there are a few different ideas for this.

One idea is to create your own lights which are really easy to do.

The other option is to buy lights designed to be put along the pathway and there are a few different options for these.

Creating You Own Halloween Party Lights

One of the easiest ways to light the path is by reusing your old plastic milk/juice bottles. We usually have the clear heavy plastic 2 lt milk cartons at home so we cut them off near the top and wash them out ready to use as party lights. Place a little sand in the bottom and pop in a tea light, the effect is great, but you can add to it by adding colored cellophane in black, orange and purple for a Halloween feel (we’ve also used green and red for Christmas).

Easy to make, looks great and you’re even recycling those old plastic containers – what’s not to love about this way to light up your path?

One cool idea that my dd wants us to try is this next one –

This ghost will light up the pathway and also give your guests a fright at the same time!

Outdoor Halloween Graveyard Decorations

Outdoor Halloween Graveyard Decorations

Spooky graveyard for HalloweenGraveyards/Cemeteries are spooky which is why the Halloween Graveyard is one of the most enduring Halloween themes. You can decorate both your house and garden as a graveyard, but I think that an outside graveyard is the spookiest option. There are lots of different ways in which you can create your very own Halloween graveyard.  You can buy a range of different Halloween graveyard decorations or even make your own.

You can start off your graveyard with tombstones and crosses and there are certainly lots of props available, but there are so many different options for you to make your Halloween Graveyard stand out from the others. If you want to create the spookiest Cemetery ever (albeit rather ‘traditional’) from skeletons to tombstones and even the grim reaper himself then have a look at this Halloween Graveyard post, but if you want your Halloween graveyard to be a little different then keep reading.

Halloween Graveyard Fence

Now you may already have a fenced yard or you may have hedging plants, but there’s just something about fencing off your Halloween graveyard that adds another element to the spooky factor you’re craving. There are some cool Halloween Graveyard fencing available for you to purchase which works really well such as these options –

Halloween Decoration Cemetery Iron Fence Kit Creepy Fence Border Party Accessory (1 count) (1/Pkg) Forum Novelties Cemetery Fence Prop, 2-Pieces

&

These can be used to great effect in fact you can even lean a couple of tombstones against them to get this spooky look –

These aren’t the only way you can create a cool Halloween graveyard fence for your own cemetery however, another option is to simply use an old fence or even a picket fence.

Using a picket fence around the area you can add different things to the fence like drops of blood, bits of flesh or a couple of ravens which transforms an ordinary picket fence into a scary ‘what kind of horrors lurk behind it’ kind of fence.

Another option is to use old fence palings that are rotted and falling down to create the effect of an old abandoned graveyard lurking behind.

The Gravestones – Important Halloween Graveyard Decorations

What is a graveyard or cemetery without gravestones. Of course you could forgo gravestones for a few wooden crosses, you could even make them crude handmade wooden crosses with names carved in them and create the illusion of an old abandoned ghost town from the old black and white western movies. If you want to go for that look then you could even put an old frayed noose over a tree as well.

You can make your own tombstones for your Halloween graveyard and this can be a fun activity in the lead up to Halloween or you can buy a range of different tombstones from very basic ones to more ornate options –

&

Once you’ve decided on the tombstones you have to decide on what else you’re going to add to your graveyard and this is where you can really stand out from the crowd.

Creating Your Halloween Graveyard Scene

Deciding on what props to add to your graveyard will help pull everything together and there are lots of options you can choose from including spooky Halloween trees – you can get some that are motion activated to make noises that will heighten visitors’ fears. You could go down the ghost route, after all where better to see a ghost than a graveyard? Then again you could do the whole ‘rise of the dead’ theme instead. This theme can be a lot of fun and there are some great props available for you to really make this the best halloween graveyard.

Another option is just to leave it as a graveyard and simply have a bat or two hanging from the tree, people will be on edge expecting more leaving it as a graveyard with the odd bat and maybe some fog (I do love using a fog machine on Halloween) will keep them on edge without needing to add anything else. Of course if you emerge as the creepy cemetery caretaker from behind a tree it will make them jump as well!

Do You Have a Spooky Halloween Tree?

Halloween TreesMost people put up a Christmas tree at Christmas, but what about having a Halloween tree at Halloween?

There are some really cool Halloween trees available and if you’ve ever been in a wooded area at night you know just how spooky trees can seem (especially when they have no leaves left on them!), which is what makes them ideal for your Halloween decor.

You can drape spiderwebs over the Halloween tree or even get some Halloween tree ornaments, but sometimes it can just be cool to leave them like they are for that desolate tree look!

If you don’t know what sort of Halloween tree you’d like to have why don’t you check out some of the alternatives that are available and work out how to fit a Halloween tree into your Halloween decor – you will not be disappointed.   Here’s a link for you – Halloween Trees.   This has a range of really cool Halloween trees for you to browse and decide on the type that will suit you best.

Let me know if you already use a Halloween tree and if you do is it a big Halloween tree or a table top one.

My Favorite Halloween Tree……..at the moment anyways!

I like the look of the Halloween tree featured below, it’s a bigger one (table top trees aren’t my favorite, I like a taller one) and it’s sound activated emitting wailing and an evil laugh, it also moves. I think it sounds fantastic, although my poor dog would probably NOT appreciate it!

Decorating Your Halloween Tree

The other fun thing about having a Halloween tree is the decorating of it.   Now some of them are fine just as they are, but other trees are fun to decorate and there are lots of different ways to do this.

Add some cobweb style netting over your tree, hang a few plastic spiders as well for a lovely Halloween inspired touch.

You can even get Halloween string lights which work like Christmas fairy lights on your tree from pumpkins to spiders, mummies to skeletons there are lots of choose from.   I also like the idea of getting a large Halloween tree or a black Christmas tree which will do double duty at both Halloween & Christmas.   With a larger tree you can add some Halloween Tree ornaments and there are lots of these to choose from.
