Gluten Free Halloween Treats

I was reading a post on the Spooky Recipes the other day where the author was talking about Gluten Free Halloween treats and I thought what a great idea.   I’m very lucky in that I don’t have to worry about gluten free products in my household, but more and more people seem to be finding that they can’t tolerate gluten so if you’re one of them here is the fantastic post I was talking about –

Halloween Costume Ideas – Costumes Beginning with L

Fancy Dress Ideas Beginning with L

Have you ever been to an alphabet party? When I was in my early 20s they were all the rage, somehow every single time I was invited to one it was always a P party which meant dressing up as something beginning with the letter P. You can choose any letter of the alphabet however and today I’ve chosen the letter L.

Fancy dress parties or costume parties are so much more fun when they’re themed, but you don’t always want to have an 80s party,a James Bond themed cocktail evening or even a Star Wars themed party. Choosing a letter to base your party around is fun because seeing how people interpret it can be really interesting…..some people really know how to think outside of the box.

Costumes Beginning with L – The List

  • Laa Laa – Instantly recognisable costume, I must admit I do find the Teletubbies a little annoying. I was so relieved when my daughter didn’t seem very taken with them 🙂
  • Lady Bug – I absolutely loved Ladybirds or Lady Bugs (depending on where you’re from) as a child and I still think they make a gorgeous costume idea.
  • Lady Gaga – Lady Gaga called herself the Queen of Reinvention when she first burst on her screens and she’s lived up to that with a range of ‘outrageous’ costumes which makes her a fun person to dress up as. Check out some of her costume ideas on these posts – Lady Gaga Official Costumes & Lady Gaga Bodysuit Inspired Costumes.
  • Lady Godiva – For those of you who don’t know the story Lady Godiva rode into town on a white pony………..wearing absolutely nothing! Basically all you need is a skin colored body suit and a long blonde wig and you have a great costume.
  • Lady Luck – Lady Luck is a fictional character that personifies luck, as she’s not really real you can dress up however you like as long as you include some symbols of luck from shamrocks to a rabbits foot or alternatively incorporate elements of gambling like dice and cards as she’s often called upon in places such as Vegas!
  • Lancelot – Sir Lancelot was one of King Arthur’s most trusted advisors and a Knight of the Round Table. He is portrayed as a romantic figure and features in numerous Medieval romance stories.
  • LAPD motorcycle cop – think Chips or The Village People
  • Lara Croft
  • Latin Dancer
  • LEGO character
  • Legolas

Lara Croft Costume Legolas – Adult Costume Latin Dancer Costume

&

  • Leia – Princess Leia from Star Wars is a classic Star Wars costume that you can wear as a costume beginning with L too!
  • Lemon
  • Leonardo (TMNT)
  • Leopard
  • Leprechaun
  • Lifeguard – If you have a Baywatch costume from previous years you can always use this for a Lifeguard costume.
  • Lime Wedge – This is a fun costume, but a word to the wise people seem to get fed up with you constantly asking if anyone has seen your Corona…..and I thought it was funny 
  • Lion
  • Little Mermaid
  • Lobster
  • Lone Ranger
  • Long John Silver – Pirate costumes are fun for all the family, so if you like pirates then Long John Silver is a great idea, check out our Pirate Costume post
  • Luigi – Luigi needs no introduction to anyone born since the mid-80s as both Luigi and Mario have worked their way firmly into our pop culture.
  • Luke Skywalker – Yet another Star Wars inspired costume beginning with L, perhaps if you’re attending a party as a couple you could go as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.

This is a beautiful Scarlet O’Hara costume that anyone who loves the Southern Belle style of dress would simply adore.   White and frilly it’s a very feminine dress from the Victorian South and includes the belt to add a little color and the brooch to add a historical element to the costume.    Don’t forget the haughty demeanor of Ms O’Hara and you really will be the ‘belle of the ball’ at whatever event you’re attending.

Now if you would prefer a little more color for your costume then we can check out some of the other Scarlett O’Hara Halloween costumes available.

Vampire Cocktails

Feeling Bloodthirsty? Try a Halloween Cocktail

Now we move into the realm of the vampires. The Vampire Cocktail is delicious and even looks a little like blood so that maybe you can evade the Vampire Kiss. If you are kissed then you might as well try the Vampire’s Delight.

Vampire Cocktail

1 scoop vanilla ice cream

1 oz triple sec

½ oz white creme de cacao

drizzle of grenadine

Blend together all of the ingredients, except the grenadine, until smooth. Pour into a cocktail glass and then drizzle the grenadine over the top.

Vampire Kiss

2 parts passion fruit-flavored rum

1 part tonic water

Splash of cranberry juice

Put all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a black cherry and a little toy bat.

If you have a number of vampires present then you can make up the next cocktail (serves 6-8 people).

The Vampire’s Delight

8 ounces pineapple juice

8 ounces raspberry liqueur

8 ounces cachaca

Mix all of the ingredients together in a large punch bown. Add frozen fingers (recipe below) and serve.

Garlic Martinis?

Begone Vampires, Begone!

There is a way to keep vampires at bay and that is garlic. So give your vampire guests a trick instead of a treat in the guise of a Garlic Martini.

If you have the foresight you can infuse your own vodka to make our first recipe, if not do not despair as there are a couple of other recipes to follow.

Garlic Martini #1

2 parts garlic infused vodka

½ part dry vermouth

This can be shaken or stirred and is great garnished with a couple of cloves of garlic.

Garlic Martini #2

1 clove garlic

1 shot gin

1 dash vermouth

Crush a clove of garlic in the bottom of a martini glass and then add the gin. Pop the dash of vermouth on the top and garnish with an olive (preferably a garlic stuffed one).

Garlic Martini #3

1 clove of garlic

2 oz potato vodka

1 dash dry vermouth

Crush the clove of garlic in the base of a cocktail shaker. Add the vodka and vermouth to the shaker, along with ice, and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass to serve with garlic-stuffed olives.

Halloween Party To Do List

Still Feeling Bloodthirsty?

Try a Cocktail Instead

The Bloodsucker Cocktail

1½ oz bacardi

½ oz cointreau

2 oz pineapple juice

1 tbsp strawberry puree

Put the rum, cointreau and juice into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a Collins glass over ice. Dip the end of a drinking straw into the puree and, holding the tip of your finger over the other end, use the straw to squirt puree into the bottom half of the drink. It will sink in red blotches, like blood splatter.

Bloody Brain Shooter

1¼ oz strawberry vodka

⅛ oz Rose’s lime juice

¾ oz Baileys

splash of grenadine

Put the vodka and lime juice into a shaker and shake well. Strain into a shot glass. Using a straw dip some Baileys into the shot, once you submerge the straw into the Baileys put your finger on top of the straw to hold the liquid in the straw. Next dip the straw tip into the vodka and slowly release your top finger. The Baileys will curdle slightly due to the lime juice and you should be able to make strands of the Baileys. Repeat this process a few times until you have built a “brain” inside the shot glass. After this add a splash of grenadine to the shot so that you have the effect of blood.

This takes a while but the effect is well worth it.

Another drink that has a similar look is the Brain Hemorrhage, although it is easier to make.

Brain Hemorrhage

1 measure peach schnapps

1 tsp Baileys

½ tsp grenadine

Pour the peach schnapps into a shot glass, next carefully float the Baileys on top. Finally top with the grenadine.

Scary Ice Cubes for your Halloween Drinks

It’s Halloween, Who’re You Gonna Call? – Ghostbusters!

Ghost Inspired Halloween Cocktails

Baileys was made for Halloween cocktails as it masquerades really well as a ghost trapped in the glass. One such cocktail is the Ghostbuster, named after the 1984 hit movie.

Ghostbuster

1 oz peach schnapps

1 oz melon liqueur

3-5 drops baileys

Put the schnapps and liqueur into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass and add the baileys drop by drop into the middle of the drink.

The Ghost

1¼ oz vanilla vodka

¼ oz chocolate liqueur

¼ oz half’n’half

¼ oz simple syrup

Put all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Strain into a cocktail glass to serve (a delicious, but not spooky twist is to rim the glass with white chocolate shavings).

Irish Ghost

1 oz baileys

1 oz coffee liqueur

1 oz herbal liqueur such as chartreuse

2 oz cream

Pour all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker, with ice and shake. Strain into an Irish coffee cup to serve.

The Color of Halloween – Orange and Black Cocktails

Orange and black are the recognized colors of Halloween so of course the Black Martini is a must have drink at any Halloween party. Make it more festive by using orange colored sugar on the glass rim as a garnish.

There is also a Black vodka on the market which makes for stunning looking Screwdrivers.

Then of course you have food coloring, this can be added to any clear cocktail that you make in order to add more atmosphere.

Black Martini

2 shots blackcurrant vodka

1 shot chambord

Shake all of the ingredients together with ice and strain into a cocktail glass to serve.

Halloween Screwdriver

tangerine juice

black vodka

Fill a highball glass with ice and then pour tangerine juice to halfway. The next step is to carefully pour the black vodka on top.

Black Widow

cranberry juice

black vodka

Fill a highball glass with ice and then pour the cranberry juice to halfway. Next pour top up carefully with the black vodka.

Non-Alcoholic Cocktails – Halloween Mocktails

Spooky Drinks for Designated Drivers

Your designated drivers have to stay alert on Halloween in order to avoid any wandering zombies on the way home. They also want to have some fun, so get out the food coloring and start coloring up the lemonade for a bit of Halloween fun. Also try the Halloween mocktails on offer.

Witches Brew (non-alcoholic)

This will make up 5 quarts.

12 cups cranberry-raspberry juice

4½ cups orange juice

2 cups pineapple juice

2 cups fresh lime juice

Combine all of the ingredients together and chill, pour into a punch bowl with some severed hand ice cubes to serve.

Halloween Sparkle Punch

This is enough punch for 8.

2/3 cup tang orange drink mix

1 quart cold water

2 cups cold ginger ale

1 pint blackberry sherbet

Place drink mix in bowl, add water and stir to dissolve. Refrigerate until party time.

When putting the punch out stir in the ginger ale.

Put 1/4 cup of sherbet in the bottom of each cup and pour drink over it.

Devil’s Juice

3 oz. cranberry (or cranapple) juice

3 oz. tomato juice

1 tsp. Tabasco sauce

1 tsp. lemon juice

2 dashes black pepper

Dash salt

Mix all of the ingredients together in a mixing glass. To serve pour into a Collins glass over ice.

If I’ve missed off your favorite Halloween cocktail then I’m really sorry please feel free to leave the recipe in my visitors book.

Happy Spooking!
